Van Gogh’s Portrait of Joseph Roulin (January-February 1889)
Van Gogh's Roulin Family Portraits Reunited in Major Exhibition
By Elysia Lior, 15 Mar 2025
The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston is set to host a groundbreaking exhibition, Van Gogh: The Roulin Family Portraits, from 30 March to 7 September 2025, before it travels to the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam from 3 October 2025 to 11 January 2026. This marks the first time that Vincent van Gogh's series of portraits depicting his close friend, postman Joseph Roulin, and his family will be showcased together.
During his time in Arles between 1888 and 1889, Van Gogh formed a deep bond with Roulin, who provided companionship and support during challenging periods, including the artist's hospitalisation following his ear injury. Van Gogh's affection for the Roulin family is evident in the extensive series of portraits he created: six of Joseph, eight of his wife Augustine, and three each of their children—Armand, Camille, and Marcelle.
The Boston exhibition will feature approximately 20 of these works, including the museum's own Postman Joseph Roulin (1888) and Lullaby: Madame Augustine Roulin Rocking a Cradle (La Berceuse) (1889). Notably, two of the five surviving versions of Augustine's portrait as La Berceuse will be displayed, offering insight into Van Gogh's exploration of maternal themes.
Securing these loans is a significant achievement for curators Katie Hanson (Boston) and Nienke Bakker (Amsterdam), as Van Gogh's works are seldom lent due to their value and fragility. The exhibition not only highlights the artist's technical prowess but also delves into the personal relationships that influenced his work, providing a poignant narrative of friendship and artistic inspiration.
Visitors will have the rare opportunity to immerse themselves in Van Gogh's intimate world, experiencing firsthand the emotional depth and humanity captured in these portraits. The exhibition promises to be a profound exploration of art, friendship, and the enduring legacy of one of history's most influential artists.
