Pope Francis Dies at 88: A Humble Shepherd's Final Journey

Pope Francis, the 266th pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church and its first leader from Latin America, passed away on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88. The Vatican confirmed that he died at 7:35 a.m. local time in his residence at Casa Santa Marta, following a stroke and subsequent cardiac complications .
Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Francis was elected pope in 2013, succeeding Benedict XVI. His 12-year papacy was marked by a commitment to humility, social justice, and outreach to marginalized communities. He was known for his progressive stances on issues such as climate change, economic inequality, and interfaith dialogue.
Despite health challenges in his later years, including a month-long hospitalization for double pneumonia earlier in 2025, Pope Francis remained active in his duties. He delivered his final public blessing on Easter Sunday, just a day before his passing
His funeral was held on April 26 in St. Peter's Square, attended by approximately 250,000 mourners, including global leaders and dignitaries . In accordance with his wishes, Pope Francis was laid to rest in a simple tomb at the Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome, a site of personal significance where he frequently prayed before the icon of the Virgin Mary, Salus Populi Romani
