By Elysia Lior, 10 May 2025

On 10 May 2025, London's National Gallery reopened its Sainsbury Wing to the public, marking the culmination of a two-year, £85 million renovation led by Selldorf Architects in collaboration with Purcell. The refurbishment introduces a more accessible and welcoming entrance, featuring a double-height foyer, clear glass façade, and improved lighting, enhancing the visitor experience.

The reopening coincides with the Gallery's 200th anniversary and the launch of "C C Land: The Wonder of Art," a comprehensive rehang displaying over 1,000 works, including masterpieces by Leonardo da Vinci and Piero della Francesca. This initiative aims to present the collection in a more engaging and thematic manner, reflecting the Gallery's commitment to accessibility and public engagement.

Director Sir Gabriele Finaldi emphasized the significance of the renovation, stating, "From 10 May, the Sainsbury Wing will be the main entrance to the National Gallery. Thanks to the reimagining of the exterior and interior spaces by architect Annabelle Selldorf, millions of visitors will be welcomed into the newly configured and subtly refurbished spaces."

The Sainsbury Wing's transformation represents a pivotal moment in the National Gallery's history, enhancing its role as a leading cultural institution in the UK.
